(UN)USUAL MATERIALS: BAMBOO FIBER
Bamboo is an unconventional plant in our culture and a relatively young material, which has managed to become a popular material for the production of a wide range of products, especially in the last twenty years. What can be made from bamboo today? For example, kitchen boards, sunglasses, bowls, decorations and various furniture.
But did you know that bamboo wood can also be used to make towel fibers?
Properties of bamboo fiber
Wondering what makes bamboo fiber more unique than ruling cotton? Bamboo fiber is naturally antibacterial, antifungal and antistatic. This is because it contains an ingredient called “bamboo kun” that protects plants from bacteria and fungi. The presence of bamboo fiber in a towel, for example, can destroy up to 70% of unwanted bacteria. This ensures a longer service life of the material. The fibers are more pleasant to the touch than pure cotton and are easier to dye. The color is brighter than other cellulose materials.
Did you know that..
The first patent for the separation of fibers from bamboo stalks was obtained by Philipp Lichtenstadt as early as 1864, however, this technology was never used in practice. The first applicable mechanical method was patented in China in 2003.
Bamboo yarn processing
So how do we get that “magic” bamboo fiber?
Bamboo fiber is a designation used for a textile raw material obtained from the stem of bamboo. And there are three ways to get it.
The first is the mechanical pulping of bamboo stalks, where the fibers are degummed, bleached, or ointment, and cut to the required length. However, this processing is very expensive and the use of fibers is therefore limited. Or we can get the fibers in a more environmentally friendly way. We grow and maintain bamboo grass on a special plantation. Such exists in Guizhou Province. During processing, the bark is scraped from the stems by semi-automatic machines, the material is then soaked in a water bath with enzymes and passed through a carding machine. The final treatment is bleaching and cleaning. The most common way, however, is the processing of technologies similar to “regulated cellulose”, applied to woody plants (beech, eucalyptus, etc.) and thanks to which we obtain viscose bamboo fibers.
Bamboo yarn can then be spun using cotton technology.
